Dunaway was a women's rights advocate, newspaper editor and writer, whose efforts were instrumental in gaining voting rights for women, she is often referred to as the "Mother of Equal Suffrage" and "the pioneer Woman Suffragist of the great Northwest." Her book Captain Gray's Company; or, Crossing the Plains and Living in Oregon was the first novel to be commercially published (truncated) in Oregon.
