In the Fall of 1945, Nelle Harper Lee transferred from Huntingdon College in Montgomery to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She spent a year at the Chi Omega sorority house, never quite fitting in, but found her place in 1946 with the editors, writers, and producers of the university's various campus publications, and joined the staff of the Rammer Jammer, a monthly humor publication. This yearbook describes the magazine as "99 and 44/100 per cent pure female...[standing] as the last outpost of the femmes in the publications world." Lee would go on to become its editor in chief. Lee appears three times throughout the yearbook -- her student photo once in the usual lineup of student portraits and then again on the Chi Omega page, as well as in a candid on the Rammer Jammer spread. (Inventory #: 7007)
