Single manuscript leaf
14th century · India
Single Manuscript Koran Leaf. 14th century.
India, probably late 14th century CE. This leaf measures approximately 11 3/8 x 8 inches. It is written in Arabic Behari script (sometimes called Herati-Kufic). Behari developed in India in the fourteenth century, it is characterized by the heavy, bold, wide horizontals contrasting with the more delicate verticals. In this mss there is a striking device in the lower corner and the text ends with a Surrah heading.
The edges of the leaf show wear and are thin in places, exhibiting damp-staining. The 13-line text is without damage, as is the marginalia. Overall this is a most attractive, dramatic leaf. (truncated)
