A photo album compiled by a well-to-do American family around 1911 while they traveled the United States visiting friends, family, and tourist attractions. The photographs show a level of skill that speaks to the fact they were interested in the art of photography. The album begins in Massachusetts with images of the Berkshire Hills and the Mount Greylock Range in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Following these there are photos from Tennessee and South Carolina showing swamps in Carolina, Carson's Springs in Tennessee. One photo is captioned "Carolina Special," and shows an action shot of the train passing by. The travelers also visited Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Niagara Falls, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. The album goes between these places in no particular order but depicts the cities and towns through well-composed amateur photography. The photos show wooded areas and natural beauty as well as cities. One set of photos shows New York and Boston harbors with images of ships including the U.S.S. Delaware. The New York skyline is pictured as well as the Capitol building and the Washington Monument as seen from a busy street full of horse drawn carriages. The went to the Eden Zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio and photographed a polar bear, posed on canons in South Carolina, and took a candid photo of President Taft in Georgia. They traveled to family farms with ducklings, pigs, and horses next to log cabins. Towards the end of the album a group of men go on a fishing and hunting trip in South Carolina. One photo shows a man holding a rattlesnake, another shows two men posed in a field with rifles, and the group is seen posed in the woods. They pose with their catch including a string-ray and a small shark. One of the photos is captioned "just nigger" and shows a young African-American man posed at the camp site. The final pages show work in a quarry with men in bowler hats working with a large General Electric generator.
An interesting collection of well-composed travel and hunting photography in the United States. (Inventory #: 410903)
