Serres (1787-1868), making use of the old methods (perforation) in his experiments on th cerebellum of horses and dogs, directed his attention mainly to the peculiar compulsory movements and positions which he deducted, (truncated) in conformity with surgeons of the 18th century, fron contra-lateral paralysis. He also observed disturbances of equilibrium but never changes in respiration or sensibility. The latter point is important since so many other researchers of the time were of the opion that the cerebellum is the seat of sensibility. An important work on the comparative anatomy of the brain in the four classes of vertebrates, applied to the physiology and pathology of the nervous system. Serres (1787-1868) was for some time head physician of the Hopital de la Pitie, later became professor of anatomy and natural science at the Jardin des Plantes, and professor of comparative anatomy as successor to Blainville, and 1841 president of the Academy of Sciences. His publications are mainly devoted to the anatomy, physiology and comparative anatomy of the brain and of other parts of the nervous system, as well as to evolution. (Inventory #: 265889)
