1890 · Salt Lake City
by Wells, Junius F.
Salt Lake City: Deseret News Company, 1890. Quarto. 480p. Includes the articles on Pioneer Women of Utah (with steel engraving of three of the pioneer women). Biographies of Harriet Page Wheeler Young (who was wife of Lorenzo Dow Young, Brigham's Young's brother), the family fled Nauvoo just after death of Joseph Smith, crossing the frozen Mississippi River and settling in Winter Quarters. Also Clara Decker Young who at age 15 married Brigham Young at Nauvoo also fleeing to Winter Quarters also including the life of Ellen Sanders Kimball. The second article on the Pioneer Women of Utah lists all the early 144 men who were the founders. Interestingly enough three on the list were noted as (colored). Also several articles on "the Morrisite War" and H.W. Lawrence, Territorial Marshal along with deputy Marshal R.T. Burton. It was the Pioneer Women of Utah who built a monument on behalf of those who died in the battle. It is interesting since the articles were aimed to inspire youth on behalf of LDS young people but much of the controversial past is not excised. Wear to extremities and hinges cracked but a scarce item.
