Written from his missionary trip to Africa, in part: "...As I sit here in the night I can hear the drums across the swamp - It is a funeral. I went over this afternoon. About a dozen of the man's wives were sitting by the crude box in which he was to be buried. When they put him in the ground they start a dance and go on for days..."
