Large oblong folio (13 1/2 in. x 18 3/4 in.). 16pp. text in French plus 56 mounted, tinted plates reproducing Appia's important set designs arranged in chronological order. Plates loose as issued, in fine condition; in publisher's green cloth and boards portfolio (portfolio soiled and flaps defective) . One of the rarest of all modern books on scenography. This volume was done shortly after Appia's death. The beautiful plates provide the best record of Appia's work, since many were taken from Appia's drawings (truncated) held in museums and private collections. His productions of Wagner's Walkyrie (1892), Tristan et Yseult (1896) and other Wagner operas are documented, as are his designs for the modern rhythmic dances of Jacques Dalcroze and Ibsen's Petit Eyolf, Orphee, King Lear, and Hamlet. Finally, there are a series of drawings from his Gluck Iphigenie operas. (Inventory #: 1021)
