Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi (1741-1821) was one of the great English women of letters of the 18th and early 19th centuries and close friend and associate of Dr. Samuel Johnson for many years. Her own writings, including Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson, published in 1786, and her letters, published in 1788, have contributed much to the world's knowledge of Johnson, and of the culture and life of the period. In this second edition of Hayward's compilation, he added new material not available for the first edition, including "fresh extracts from Mrs. Piozzi's private diary ("Thraliana"), " additional marginal notes on books, and "copious extracts from letters hitherto unpublished.
