Cats; "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", Plate 115: Harper's May

Printed between 1895 and 1900, "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" ("Masters of the Poster") was a lithographed series of 256 plates that reproduced the best American and European posters of the time. Under the artistic direction of Jules Cheret (1836-1932), the prints were published as a monthly subscription. In addition to the four prints disseminated every month, there were 16 bonus plates each originally designed by noted artists including Cheret. This print was originally an advertisement for Harper's Magazine by Edward Penfield (1866-1925), an (truncated) artist who lived and worked in New York City. Known as the "originator of the poster in America", Penfield designed for Harper's in the 18790's and his work is still highly collectible and sought after. In very good condition, with a faint crease mark to upper right corner. (Inventory #: 215938)
