Tilden (1814-1886) was the democratic candidate for president in the most controversial election of the 19th-century, the 1876 election in which he lost by one electoral vote. The votes of Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina came under question and a commission was set up and eventually all questioned votes were given to Tilden's opponent, Rutherford B. Hayes.
