In July 1845 a series of warehouses in New York burned out of control. One of the buildings contained hundreds of sacks of saltpetre. The heat was so intense that some of it liquified. Upper stories of the building fell to the ground compressing this liquified mass that then came into contact with superheated water. The resulting explosion was tremendous. Hare (truncated)
