INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "For Edmund Gosse whose love of Howells endears him to an over-seas neighbor Hamlin Garland." Dedication page (book dedicated to his parents) is inscribed "Hamlin Garland Boston, 1891" which is odd considering the Preface is dated 1922. Signature of R. E. Spiller, London, 1928 on front free endpaper. Pencil notation on front free endpaper "Return to Hamlin Garland". First published in 1891 (Inventory #: 1431)
