First Night: The Road (Original screenplay for the 1963 television episode)

N.p.: N.p., 1962. Draft script for Season 1 Episode 2 of the 1963-1964 television series. From the archive of publisher George Locke. Manuscript annotations throughout, consisting solely of penciled checkmarks, likely indicating the completion of the filming each scene.

Included is a typescript treatment for the same episode, circa 1975, transcribed by George Locke, who included the text in his 1976 book, "The Year of the Sex Olympics and Other Plays," collecting three television screenplays by Nigel Kneale.

In the 18th century, an English village is haunted by terrifying apparitions, although the ghosts may be linked to a futuristic (truncated) presence. Originally aired on September 29, 1963, on BBC, and currently considered lost.

Noted Manx screenwriter Nigel Kneale is today best remembered for his work in television, particularly for the successful science fiction "Quatermass" series. He was twice nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay, and also penned several collections of short stories, one of which won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1950.
