Miles (1839-1925) in civilian dress. Boldly signed "Nelson A. Miles Lieutenant General U.S. Army" beneath his image on the lower margin. American General; served through Civil War; awarded Congressional Medal of Honor; engaged in frontier fighting (1869-1880); led successful campaigns against the Apache and Sioux tribes; fought in Cuba and Puerto Rico in Spanish-American War.
