The Shorter Catechism of Negro Equality

n,p, 1863. Good. Small broadside (12 x 17 cm.) mounted on one side of a leaf (14 x 22 cm.) probably extracted from a small scrapbook. 3 small unrelated newspaper clippings mounted on other side. Some brownspotting, wrinkling and wear on broadside and newspaper clippings. Scrapbook leaf worn around edges. An odd broadside, perhaps Republican, which argues that Democrats are the pro-Black party. The broadside concludes with: "All these things were done by Democrats, and yet they deny being in favor of noegro equality, and charge it upon Republicans -- just like the thief who cries 'stop thief' the loudest." OCLC locates three copies (Princeton, Library (truncated) Company and Hofstra) of a only slightly larger broadside which ours might have been before possible trimming. The Library Company also lists a larger version ( 19 x 29 cm.). We're not sure how this has been dated around 1863. The latest event mentioned in the broadside appears to be the election of Reuben Wood as Governor of Ohio which happened in the early 1850s. (Inventory #: 95433)
