This fascinating and informative thematic map depicts the Atlantic Ocean, showing the form and directions of currents, the distribution of heat at the surface, and navigation, trade routes, and hydrography. This double page map extends from the Gulf of Mexico to the Red Sea, and south t the Cape of Good Hope. An inset in the lower left depicts "Chart of the Currents in the SW Part of the South Atlantic Ocean and Around Cape Horn." Extensively detailed with many notations, references, (truncated) and data. From the seminal 'Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena', featuring Johnston's classic symmetrical border design.

Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) was a Scottish geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Partnered with his brother William, Johnston maintained a prolific map publishing firm throughout the 19th century. Their output ranged from globes to atlases and wall maps.
