[France], 1800. Good. Manuscript on paper (170 x 120 mm). Title-page + 60 pages of manuscript thusly: title (verso blank), [53] handwritten pages, 9 blank ff. (1 leaf removed), [7] handwritten pages, 6 blank ff. Light to medium browning, slight staining, bound in a limp vellum wallet binding (soiled as expected, no doubt having literally been used in the field), a cloth hoop attached to bottom of flap. Stitching to outside of spine excellently visible. EXCELLENTLY PRESERVED FIELD MANUSCRIPT OF EQUESTRIAN MEDICINE, CERTAINLY CREATED BY AN ARMY VETERINARIAN. Encased in a vellum wallet binding, the booklet must be bent in order that a cloth loop, attached (truncated) to the bottom of the fold-over of the wallet, can be slipped on and off. The manuscript is very well protected as a result. One imagines that it could be carried out in the field and on the person. A printed sheet pasted to inside front cover can be read in reverse ("Régié des vivres" i.e. food administration). Particularly ingenious is the shaping of the outside flap, which has been cut round in order to prevent wear to what would have been sharp corners. (Inventory #: 4368)
