by Downey, William Scott
New York: Published for the Author, by Edward Walker, 1856. Tenth edition of this collection of Christian proverbs by Baptist missionary William Scott Downey, originally issued in 1853: “Steam gives action to the engine; even so does the love of Jesus give life to the soul.” The proverbs are followed by parables, dreams, and a selection of reviews; Downey evidently embarked on an extended book tour in the 1850s, soliciting endorsements and subscriptions on both sides of the Atlantic for this self-published collection. The primary interest of the book is the survival of its exceptional antebellum American morocco-gilt publisher’s binding, in very nearly fine condition. Octavo, measuring 7 x 4.5 inches: [8], 9-128. Contemporary red publisher’s morocco, upper board double-ruled and lettered in gilt, with ornamental spandrels and central device featuring two angels holding a crown over a butterfly. Spine with gilt-stamped bands, floral ornaments, and vignettes; lower board repeating rules and spandrels with central gilt chalice device. Pale yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. Penciled presentation inscription to front free endpaper: “Mrs. Betsey Farwell / by her Son / Marcus / Chicago Nov 29 / 56.” Lightest edgewear; text block toned. Unfinished needlepoint bookmark reading “Remember me” laid in.
