LGBTQ Community Newspaper The Bay Area Reporter, 1973-1975

[LGBTQ] Archive of 6 issues of the Bay Area Reporter (B.A.R.), one of the longest-running LGBTQ+ newspapers in the United States, documenting the social, political, and cultural life of San Francisco’s gay community in the 1970s. Each have approximately 30 pages. Each measure 8.5" x 11". Founded in 1971, B.A.R. played a crucial role in covering issues affecting the LGBTQ+ population, from police harassment and legal battles to nightlife, entertainment, activism, and and social issues affecting the gay and lesbian community, particularly during the post-Stonewall era and the rise of LGBTQ+ rights movements. Issues included in this archive are:
[1] (truncated) May 2nd, 1973 (Vol. 3, No. 9). Reports on unity efforts for Gay Freedom Day, an important early precursor to San Francisco’s Pride celebrations. Covers political tensions and activism among LGBTQ+ leaders and community members as well as a focus on drag and "turnabout" events.
[2] June 13, 1973 (Vol. 3, No. 12). Announces upcoming LGBTQ+ community awards and the importance of parades as political and cultural expressions. Highlights figures in San Francisco’s drag and queer performance scene and an interview with famed pin-up Tempest Storm.
[3] N.D., issue implies November 1973. Vol. 3, No. 25. Details the establishment of Operation Concern, an LGBTQ+ mental health and support initiative. Discusses the growing need for crisis intervention, mental health services, and support networks within the gay community. Local Methodist Church approving of a Gay Methodist Caucus,
"The Laughing Policeman: Unfunny Film Furor!"

[4] N.D., issue implies December 1973. Vol. 3, No. 26. Review of the controversial film The Laughing Policeman and its negative portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters. Explores Hollywood’s depictions of gay individuals and the resulting backlash from activists. Features a gala event honoring a prominent LGBTQ+ community member, with photographs of attendees and drag performers.

[5] May 4, 1975 (Vol. 5, No. 9). Features a political column by Harvey Milk critiques the inequalities within the city’s bail system. Blackstone Testimonial Dinner, a farewell event for Sgt. Elliot Blackstone, a pioneering ally of the LGBTQ+ community within the San Francisco Police Department.


[6] January 23, 1975 (Vol. 5, No. 2). "Michelle ★ 20 Golden Years" celebrates the 20-year career of a legendary ex-marine drag performer, Mike Gerry, who's stage name is Michelle. Features a political column by Harvey Milk critiquing the Ford administration. Examines the role of drag culture in the LGBTQ+ community and its influence on entertainment and activism.

The magazine includes additional community news, a nightlife guide, advertisements for gay-owned businesses, and cultural listings, reflecting the vibrancy of the Bay Area’s LGBTQ+ scene during the post-Stonewall era. Some minor wear and staining, one issue has some water damage but does not affect text. Some issues have three punch holes. Overall very good condition. An important artifact of LGBTQ+ history, offering insight into the activism, culture, and daily life of San Francisco’s gay community in the 1970s. (Inventory #: 21456)
