First limited edition, one of 1,500 copies signed by Hersey, Lawrence, and Penn Warren, this being number 1226. Tall quarto (12 1/2 (truncated) x 9 1/2 inches; 318 x 241 mm). With eight full-color silkscreens.

Publisher's full black Aniline top grain leather, front board lettered in blind. Black endpapers. All edges dyed black. In the original black silk slipcase, lettered in black on spine panel. A near-fine copy.

A sobering account of the events of August 6, 1945, presented in an appropriately somber binding of midnight black, and augmented with Penn Warren's powerful verse and Lawrence's accomplished and striking silk-screen prints.

"Sidney Shiff acquired the Limited Editions Club in 1979 and together with his son Benjamin initiated radical changes in the style and production of its books. Instead of illustrating texts in the narrative tradition of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, artists were free to interpret a text of their own choosing. Thus the books gradually took on a more contemporary appearance" (Phillips/Zwicker, Grolier/American Livre de Peintre 27).
