Small Black and white photo of Barr in a card photo frame from Peterson Studio in Tacoma (Washington)

Tacoma: Peterson Studio, 1920. Photo approx. 7 x 9.5 cm. SIGNED ("Sincerely Roberta"). in lower right corner of image. On back of the card frame is "Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Moss," written in what appears to be Barr's hand. Barr was born as Roberta Spencer in Tacoma, Washington and graduated from Lincoln High School in either Tacoma or Seattle. She attended Wilberforce University at least briefly following which she worked at various jobs, including X-ray technician and as a junior executive at a tobacco firm. She earned bachelor and Master's degrees from the University of Washington and began working as a teacher and librarian in the Seattle schools in 1960. (truncated) She also moderated a local TV show on KING-TV, an NBC station in Seattle from 1965 to 1970. In 1973 she became principal of Seattle's Lincoln High School, making her the first woman and first African American to be principal of a Seattle Public School. Accompanying this photo is an article (from which we got some of our information) clipped from the Sunday Oct. 20, 1985 issue of The Seattle Times / Seattle Post-Intelligencer about Barr and her local leadership of the annual fund drive for the United Negro College Fund.
