First edition of this uncommonly sympathetic account following a lesbian through her life, lovers, and descent into sex work — as told by a male friend. Author Robert Leslie, a neighbor and friend of the titular character (Doris), chose a more nuanced approach to homosexuality compared with other common depictions of the era. Outdated phrases and questionable marketing of the book aside, Leslie uses progressive ideals and nuanced language when telling Doris's story. While at first glance this book might appear to be as many from this period a pseudo-scientific work of fiction, both the (truncated) book's extensive bibliography and Leslie's other works of nonfiction (including books on cancer patients, drug addicts, and religion ) strongly suggest this is a true account.
