Marlboro, MA: C.H. Proctor, 1890. Near Fine. Marlboro, MA: C.H. Proctor, n.d., ca. 1890s. Pictorial broadside printed on front panel of unused brown paper bag (38x25.5cm.). Edges toned, a few nicks and smudges, else a Near Fine example.
Paper bag promoting the condition powders "For Horses, Cattle, Poultry, and Swine" invented by C.H. Proctor of 13 Brown Street, Marlboro, Mass. "Will put a Horse in Good Condition when other means fail. It will CURE AND PREVENT COLIC or wasting from Worms...Old horses, run down, skinny and all broken up will be wonderfully benefitted by feeding this food."
The bag is illustrated with a sharp engraving of a white man handling a rearing black stallion, a young Black boy in the background feeding a much more docile horse from the palm of his hand. A discreet example of the largely overlooked community of Black workers tasked with the care and training of horses at the turn of the 20th century.
Not separately catalogued in OCLC as of March, 2025. (Inventory #: 32355)
