London: Hannah Humphrey, 1814. First Edition. George Cruikshank. Humorous depiction of Edmund Kean as Richard III, with the Drury Lane Theatre balanced on the hump on his back and his crown. The point being made is that Kean was carrying the weight of the theatre on his head. 39 by 28 cm. OCLC First Search list only Yale and the LOC with physical copies. We assume the British Library also has this. Still, scarce. The illustration portion of the print has been planted within a more modern piece of paper which frames it inconspicuously. The newer paper serves as the margin. As such, it is clean as can be, perhaps too clean, as it calls attention to the rather sophisticated work that was done. The illustration portion of the etching does have some light and inconspicuous soiling. It is, though, an especially bright print from that period. (Inventory #: 20276)
