Original red hardcover binding with black and gold spine lettering and decoration, with the author's signature stamped in black on the front cover; the spine is somewhat darkened and fraying at the bottom edge, and some of the corners have small bumps. The rear inner hinge paper is cracked, but the hinge remains intact and strong. The unclipped dustjacket is slightly rubbed at the extremities, with several small tears and creases, and moderate sun-fading to the spine; protected in archival Mylar. There are a few clear tape repairs to the back of the dustjacket. Photograph of Hemingway, "taken at the Spanish Front," by Joris Ivens, appears on the back cover. Minor soiling to the top edge of the text. There is minor soiling to the copyright page, and to the margins of a few pages, but the text is otherwise clean and unmarked.
