One of the major political works of the late 19th century. George asked why economic and technological development was accompanied by an increase in poverty, and finding the answer tied up in increased value of land, proposed a single tax on land values. The tax would generate enough revenue to abolish all other taxes and eliminate poverty, and would also incentivize individual endeavor. The book sold millions of copies by the end of the century and influenced generations of progressive leaders. George Bernard Shaw credited the book with turning him into a socialist as a young man: "When I was thus swept into the great socialist revival of 1883, and spoke from that very platform on the same great subject, I found that 5/6 of those who were swept in with me had been converted by Henry George.
