The Boston Gazette, 1782. unbound. very good(+). Folio. 4 pages (14-7/8 x 9-1/2 inches), with masthead engraving of the bird of liberty flying from the England's royal cage, engraved by Paul Revere. Boston: The Boston Gazette and the Country Journal, 1782. A spot of foxing on front page; some separation along the fold, still a near fine copy.

The Boston Gazette was an immensely influential revolutionary era newspaper published in Boston for much of the 18th century. This issue came out towards the end of the American Revolution, and contains a (truncated) column written by Paul Revere, defending his conduct during the Penobscot Expedition. Revere addresses charges of a "notorious breach of duty" during the military action made by a Mr. Todd. Revere was a colonel of artillery in the expedition, launched to reclaim a portion of the Maine coast recently taken by the British. (Inventory #: 320297)
