1940s Car Racing Photo Archive at Los Angeles Coliseum

Early auto racing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum photo archive. Circa 1940s-50s. The collection consists of 7 vintage black-and-white silver gelatin photographs, each approx 10" x 8". Photos depict high-speed action on the track, as well as moments of celebration and camaraderie among drivers and spectators. The photographs prominently feature open-wheel midget race cars with streamlined bodies, exposed suspensions, and large racing numbers, indicative of models produced by manufacturers like Kurtis Kraft in the late 1940sThe grandstands in the background are filled with spectators dressed in period attire, including wide-brimmed hats and collared (truncated) shirts.

Some images show cars speeding around the track, with drivers gripping the wheel tightly and leaning into turns, while others capture head-to-head competition as vehicles race past the checkered start/finish line.
