first edition
1906 · New York
by Wells, H.G. [Herbert George]
New York: The Century Co, 1906. First printing. Very good.. First US edition of this sci-fi novel in which a passing comet causes sudden changes to Earth, rendering humanity peaceful and cooperative. Wells started his career spinning fantastic tales to make money, but soon began to use his novels to explore political reform. Well-known for exploring the kind of scientific crisis imagined in this work — that of a comet passing dangerously close to Earth — Wells is less known today for his views on socialism and polyamory, which become the focus of the drama here. It was first serialized in THE DAILY CHRONICLE. 7.5'' x 5''. Original dark blue cloth, stamped in light green, grey and black to front board, lettered in light green to spine. viii, 378 pages. Spine with slight lean, some wear and soil to boards, else sound.
