[light shelfwear, minor spotting to top edge, discoloration to endpapers; the jacket is lightly soiled, with a bit of wear at the extremities, short closed tear at lower front flapfold]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED (twice) by the poet on the half title page: he has written "by / Stephen Spender" above the printed line COLLECTED POEMS, and beneath it "To Ron / with admiration / from / Stephen / Sept 1975." ("Ron" is artist R.B. Kitaj.) Spender's first collection of his work. Laid in are two clipped magazine articles: (1) a letter to the editor from John Sutherland, in the Times Literary Supplement of December 12, 2003, printed under the heading "Spender's Courage," with a couple of red-ink check marks by Kitaj; and (2) an article, "Five young writers who changed my world," by Philip Toynbee, from the Observer Magazine, 20 June 1976.
