first edition Full Calf
1897 · London
by Wood, John George
London: James Nisbet & Co., Limited. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. at the Ballantyne Press, London and Edinburgh, 1897. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Attractive full calf binding, with gilt centerpiece of Queen's School emblem, by Relfe Brothers Limited of London. We assume this was bound as a reward or prize for a student who somehow distinguished himself. All edges are marbled. Endpapers have a different marble design. 8vo. 18 by12.5 cm. xii, [2], 340 pp. Profusely illustrated, with most illustrations co-mingled with the text, but a few plates as well, the plates counted as two pages in the pagination. Note the book doesn't give the name of the author, nor the date of publication. This copy, rebound by the school, dispensed with the publisher's advertisements that followed the text. The spine is sunned. The joints are heavily rubbed and have surface roughness, and the leather on the spine has some surface degradation as well, but less so. The perimeter of the half-title. Otherwise the leaves are clean, the text block, tight.
