Indianapolis/New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good. (c.1947). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, modestly shelfworn, some fading to the spine, old department store price sticker (The May Co.) on rear pastedown]. Novel about the effects of the repeal of Prohibition on a small Kentucky town whose economy is centered around the distillation of whisky. A contemporary review notes that "the politicians [of the town] design their campaigns and make their mischief around themes suggested by the dominant role played in their lives by the manufacture of whisky. Bankers, idealists, teachers, reformers all look to possible prosperity from this activity, as toward salvation." Two men are at the center of the story, one who's determined to salvage his family name from the disgrace of his father's death, the other an alcoholic who's looking forward to his inheritance from a distillery fortune. .
