by Wallace, Henry A.
New York: Round Table Press, 1934. Advance reading copy, issued before publication of the first edition. 139 pp. Bound in dust jacket, trimmed and used as wraps, as was the style for many US publishers' advance copies at the time. Near Fine with lightly worn and creased wraps. A rare pre-publication copy of a history book by leftwing reformer Henry A. Wallace. He was Secretary of Agriculture under Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a key ideologue of the New Deal, later serving as Vice-President until he was dropped in favor of Harry Truman in 1944. His third party presidential run in 1948 was quite controversial; within two years Wallace would repudiate the Progressive Party he founded, though it continued until 1955. His legacy would be tarnished by accusations of disloyalty and sympathy for America's Cold War adversary, the Soviet Union. He is most often remembered for his 1942 speech declaring the 20th century the "Century of the Common Man.
