London: Printed by T. N. for Henry Herringman, 1677. FIRST EDITION. 214 x 156 mm. (8 1/2 x 6 1/4"). 11 p.l., 45, [1] pp.
Pleasing late 19th or early 20th century brown calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed in ink on verso of front free endpaper), double gilt-ruled border, smooth spine with gilt lettering, all edged gilt. Front pastedown with book label of Marion C. Walker; verso of title and leaf G1 with small ink stamp of the Selbourne Library. MacDonald 81a; Wing D-2372. Spine just slightly rubbed in places, paper faintly toned (but much less than usual), a couple of leaves a bit soiled, but quite a pleasing copy--lustrous outside and very clean inside.
This dramatic adaptation of Milton's "Paradise Lost" was, apparently, never staged, but it enjoyed widespread popularity when it came into print--according to DNB, it even outsold the original(!). It is an uncommon work in the marketplace.. (Inventory #: ST12900g)
