London: John Whittaker, 1816. MAGNA CARTA. One of a small edition of John Whittaker's gold-printed edition of the Magna Carta, produced in celebration of the 600th Anniversary of the charter's signing. Folio (16 x
13 1/8 inches; 405 x 332 mm). 13 text leaves, including the half-title and title-page. All leaves are printed on recto only in a bright gold on thick paper.
Full contemporary paneled brown calf, rebacked. Corners renewed. With original red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Boards elaborately tooled and stamped in gilt and blind, with gilt bell corner devices. Thick gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Drab green endpapers. Boards a bit rubbed and scuffed. Some fairly minor marginal foxing. Overall a very good copy of this beautiful production.
The first English book printed in gold. Printed by John Whittaker using his newly invented process of printing in burnished gold letters. The work was issued in different formats, with deluxe copies of the work containing additional leaves and illumination on vellum. This work was printed in celebrating on the 600th anniversay of the signing of the Magna Carta and copies were intended for the king and other nobles.
