Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1941. Two vintage publicity photographs of comic actress and singer Martha Raye, dated 1940 and 1941, respectively. One with a date stamp on the verso, and the other with the stamp of studio photographer Ray Jones.
Martha Raye signed with Paramount Pictures in 1936, going on to appear in a number of film musicals and comedies. During World War II she performed extensively with the USO, and was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1969 at the 41st Academy Awards for her efforts—becoming the first woman to receive the award.
From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where we worked well into the 1950s.
