London: John Ogilby, 1675. Framed. Framed by Chelsea Frames, New York. Unusual and attractive hand-colored copper engraved survey road map in terms of its composition, with the print divided into six long strips, which the picture shows as if they are unspooled scrolls. Besides the Rococo decoration framing the title -- the cartouche -- the map features delightful vignettes, all hand-colored, representing the towns, churches, hills along the way, and charming directional devices, also hand-colored, in each of the vertical segments. With frame and matting, 43.5 by 54 cm. The map itself, as fully visible: 33 by 44 cm. This map is one not always hand-colored, nor when hand-colored, done to the same extent as this copy. A few areas where the paint applied for coloring leeched beyond their designated area. Scattered light soiling. The modern frame, with its embossed sinewy vine design and gilt finish, is attractive and has no issues.
