Engraved frontispiece showing the match in Paris between Anderssen and Morphy. 102 pages, plus one-page index. 19th-century quarter pebbled cloth, marbled boards.
Provenance: Dr. Max Lange (1832-1899), Leipzig (inkstamp on title verso, annotations in the text). The author's copy of the first edition, with extensive notes in pen and pencil by Lange in the 108th part of the first game (the Evans gambit) on pages 47 to 50; seven additional pages contain further marginalia. This first edition was published anonymously, but the 1881 second edition credited the work to Lange. This edition was much revised and enlarged, containing examinations of 300 games (also Leipzig: Veit & Comp.). (Inventory #: 410577)
