1947 · Universal City
by Ella Raines (subject)
Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1947. Four vintage publicity photographs of actress Ella Raines, including one double-weight and three single-weight. One with a mimeo snipe on the verso.
Ella Raines was discovered by film director Howard Hawks during a theatre production at the University of Washington. She shortly thereafter signed with Hawks' new production company, gaining fame virtually overnight as the company's first and sole contract star. Raines made her screen debut in "Corvette K-225" (1943), and would go on to appear in a number of mysteries and films noir over the ensuing decade, most notably opposite Franchot Tone in "Phantom Lady" (1944) and in "The Web" (1947) with Edmund O'Brien.
From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where we worked well into the 1950s.
8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus to Near Fine. (Inventory #: 164584)
