(B&W photographs, facsimiles) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page; the inscription is to film director Vincent Sherman, thanking him "for your memories of this reborn star." A biography of "the Netherlands' first Hollywood star"; in Dutch, but with a three-page synopsis in English near the back of the book. Born Hein van der Niet, the actors worked in Holland and Germany under the name Frits van Dongen during the 1930s, and after moving to the U.S. in 1939 had a decent career as a (primarily) supporting player (as Philip Dorn) during the 1940s and early 1950s, his most notable role being was as Lars "Papa" Hanson in George Stevens's 1948 film I REMEMBER MAMA. His first starring role in Hollywood (one of the few he would ever have) was in the 1941 Warner Bros. film UNDERGROUND, directed by Vincent Sherman, to whom this copy of the book is inscribed; also laid in is a letter from the author to Mr. Sherman, further expressing his gratitude.
