Bound in original blue paper wrappers with a color printed dust jacket of a vessel at full sail; jacket chipped at head and tail of spine, split at folds, in a protective cellophane wrapper. Paper stock brown with age around the margin but not cracking. A remarkable survival.
First Italian Edition. Very nice copy of Melville’s novella about a slave rebellion on a Spanish ship the Saint Dominick and an American whaler’s encounter with the Captain, Benito Cereno and his crew. Melville based his story on the Amistad incident of 1839, where the crew of the ship was taken over the slaves on their way to market.
Pavese was an important Italian translators making English and American literature accessible to an Italian audience. He translated Herman Melville, Gertrude Stein and William Faulkner, as well as Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens and James Joyce. His edition of Moby Dick appeared in Italy in 1941. . (Inventory #: 1345)
