1899 · College Point, N.Y.
by [Missionaries]. [Orphans]
College Point, N.Y., 1899. Very good.. 136; 144; 144; 60pp. plus two supplementary leaves laid in. Contemporary black half morocco and cloth, gilt. Corners and spine ends rubbed. Front hinge tender, minor worming to board. Internally clean. The present work is the newsletter of the Berachah Orphanage, an institution connected with the Christian and Missionary Alliance founded by A.B. Simpson. The orphanage was established in 1888 at College Point, on Long Island, and later moved to Nyack. The newsletter was edited by the Rev. D.Y. Schultz, and included scripture lessons, notes from activities at the orphanage, and updates on other missionary works carried out by the Alliance. Interestingly, some of these missionary activities were directed at the nearby town of Flushing, in Queens. The two "supplements" laid in are simple pictorial slips depicting children, presumably orphans or the newly adopted. We find no copies in OCLC, though there appears to be a run of some length at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsylvania. Yale holds a partial run of the orphanage's Annual Report.
