14th century · Germany
by A PARTIAL MEDIEVAL VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF RECOVERED FROM A BINDING, STILL ATTACHED TO THE ORIGINAL (16TH CENTURY?) BOARDS
Germany, 14th century. 255 x 157 mm. (10 1/8 x 6 1/8"). With seven extant lines of text and music in a gothic hand.
Four-line staves in red, two large initials in red. With part of a 17th century(?) document on paper lining the spine, remnants of a 16th century printed leaf on the pastedown, and two inked labels on spine. With some soiling and small stains, otherwise in very good condition.
This specimen presents an excellent opportunity to examine how Medieval manuscripts and other paper waste were used in the construction of later bindings. While it is not unusual to find examples of manuscripts that have been recovered from bindings, less often is the binding structure itself and as a whole preserved, as here. In the present case, we can see that, in addition to the manuscript leaf, the binding made use of other waste paper, including a later document in Dutch and a printed work in black letter. Two labels have also been preserved, giving us information about the contents of the binding, which appears to have contained a work by Johann Ferus (1495-1554), prolific post-Reformation writer.. (Inventory #: ST19350-047)
