signed first edition
1928
by Lawrence, D.H.
1928. [signed, with a couplet] Second Series Number Twenty-Two. London: Ernest Benn, [1928]. Original self-wrappers, the front cover serving as title page, with (original?) plain glassine wrapper.
"First Collected Edition," per Roberts -- this being poems selected from LOVE POEMS AND OTHERS (1913) and from AMORES (1916), per the "Bibliography" on the inside rear cover. Humbert Wolfe edited this Second Series (and provided an Introduction here); the First Series of THE AUGUSTAN BOOKS, edited by Edward Thompson, consisted of 56 titles published in 1925-1926. This copy is in close-to-fine condition (a trace of foxing but very little wear or soil; there is a little rust from the staples). Included is an old glassine wrapper (about half an inch shorter than the booklet) in near-fine condition; glassine was often used for wrappered items in the 1920s, but we are unable to assert that this is definitely original. This undated first impression is a rather scarce booklet; the 1934 "third edition" in brown wrappers is much more frequently seen. Roberts A38. This copy has a handwritten couplet and the signature of D.H. Lawrence on the front cover, as follows: "In you is trembling and fusing | The creation of a new-patterned dream, dream of a generation | D.H.Lawrence". The couplet comes from the fourth verse of "Dreams Nascent" (from his book AMORES), which appears on page 20 of this booklet. A unique copy of a scarce item. (Inventory #: 15673)
