The author was one of the principal founders and the corresponding secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and thus had an intimate knowledge of the subject... The account of the Blonde, he asserts, was a 'booksellers' speculation' prepared by another and unfriendly hand... he remarks that the missionaries were treated with 'contempt and calumny'". Forbes was unable to clear up the confusion concerning the date of the work which is 1827 according to the title page but after 1828 according to a printed notice facing the title page: "This discussion was originally printed in the North American Review, No. LVIII, for January 1828, Art.III p.59. In this impression a few additional passages have been inserted, for the purpose of treating some topics more fully than the limits of an article in the Review would admit. (Inventory #: 126361)
