In this article, the author claims to have recorded a new tribe of Native Americans, who were nearly wiped about by gold seekers in California. "That a strange tribe of Indians once dwelt on New River, a northern tributary of Trinity River in the rugged mountains of northwestern California, has been known for more than half a century, and yet only seven words of their language have been published and neither the name of the tribe nor anything definite about them has been recorded.” The basis of Merriam's research was an interview with Saxy Kid, who was thought to be the lone survivor of the tribe.
