by Mao Zedong (subject)
Paris: AFP Photo, 1976. Vintage borderless press photograph of Mao Zedong, taken circa 1959 and struck in 1976, at the time of Mao's death. Printed mimeo snipe in French and English affixed to the verso.
Mao's health steadily declined in the final years of his life, largely due to his chain-smoking habit. He suffered three major heart attacks in 1976, and passed away nearly a week after the third, on September 9, 1976. Shrouded in the CCP flag, his embalmed body lay in state at the Great Hall of the People for one week after his death, and his body was later put on display in the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong in Beijing.
