Eric F. Schmidt's survey and excavation of Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire, began in 1930 and continued for eight seasons. It was the first scientific excavation of the area, and the records, featuring an extensive use of photography and and illustration, exhibit an especially high standard of archaeological field recording for the era.
