This map depicts the Battle of Ligny, which marked the last victory of Napoleon before his defeat at Waterloo two days later. A plan of the area, depicting houses, cultivated land, roads, forests and fields, is overlaid with diagrams showing battle positions and movements. Blue represents the French army and green represents the Prussian Army. This map shows the Battle at 1/4 past 2 o'clock P.M. William Siborne (1797-1849) was a British officer and military historian commissioned by Roland Hill, Commander of the British Army, to construct a model of the Battle of Waterloo. After extensive research, he produced a series of 11 maps: two showing Belgium and Frame, and 9 depicting the battles of Quatre-Bras, Ligny, and Wavre. The battle maps are printed using Bates Patent Anaglyptograph, a system of shading which when viewed at an angle give the impression of seeing the topological relief. (Inventory #: 325570)
